The Trust was incorporated in October 2000, and publicly launched by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and the Mayor of Calderdale at an Open Day held at the Hanson Lane Enterprise Centre in Halifax.

The mission of the Trust has been defined by the board as:

"working to make Halifax a vibrant, multi-cultural and
self sustaining community."

The Board went on to set out its initial aims as follows:

  • Strengthen the local economy

  • Create more jobs and businesses

  • Support the next generation

  • Encourage self help and responsibility

  • Promote positive relationships between different cultures and communities

  • Enhance the environment and quality of
    life in Halifax

Halifax Opportunities Trust is proud of its roots in West Central Halifax, which is increasingly a lively multi-cultural neighbourhood that is home to over 11.000 people and more than 400 businesses.  The Trust acts as a supportive paartner to a large number of organisations based both locally and further afield.  New relationships are being formed every day to further our aims and objectives.

Even before the civil unrest in teh Northern towns and cities in 2001 threw into sharp relief the need to tackle the divisions and mistrust which can divide our towns and cities, Halifax Opportunities Trust had committed itself to reaching out to other communities across the town trying to build a culture of mutual support and inclusiveness between people who are active on the ground in trying to improve their neighbourhoods.
