HALIFAX (WEST CENTRAL) BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

The Association was Constituted at a meeting on the 29th July 1996. Membership is open to any business located in the West Central Halifax area along with any person interested in contributing their time or services in the area. Any business located within the West Central Halifax area automatically qualifies to become a member of the Association.

The objectives of the Association are as follows:-

  1. To act as a strong, effective forum representing the interests of all businesses in West Central Halifax
  2. To provide a means of dialogue and discussion between the local business community and the Halifax Opportunities Trust and other agencies on matters of local interest.
  3. To promote the West Central Halifax area as a location for new investment and development aimed at improving conditions and prospects for both existing and new business.
  4. To encourage and support local businesses wherever possible to make job opportunities available to residents of West Central Halifax, in order to reduce the high level of unemployment and increase the prosperity of the area.
  5. To raise awareness of the goods and services provided by local businesses and encourage inter-trading within the area.
  6. To encourage other local businesses to attend meetings and to join the Association.

An Annual General Meeting is held along with up to three General Meetings at which times guest speakers are invited to speak on relevant topics chosen by the Committee. The Committee is made up of business people with an active interest in the area. Committee meetings are held four times a year and the current Committee consists of :-

Sure Start West Central Halifax - The Aim of Sure Start is to work with parents-to-be, parents and children to provide the physical, intellectual and social development of babies and young children - particularly those who are disadvantaged - so that they can flourish at home and when they get to school, and thereby break the cycle of disadvantage for the current generation of young children.

Tops Mentoring Programme
- Tops Mentoring Scheme is a process which raises the self-esteem, aspirations and achievements of young people and prepares them for adult life and the world of work.

The pilot mentoring scheme began in September 1999 with Halifax High School, involving thirty-three Year 10 students and fourteen mentors from local companies and the public sector.
