Where can volunteering lead?

As part of Volunteers Week 2018 we asked former volunteer Maryam how she found volunteering at Jubilee Children’s Centre and how it lead to part time employment:

How did you first hear about volunteering at the children’s centres?

From attending the centre with my children I had seen on notice board bout support that was offered by an employment advisor.  I had a meeting with Employment Advisor and Trainer Lal as my long term goal was finding employment however at that time I couldn’t commit to work due to the age of my children and the lack of recent work experience.  I wasn’t sure what direction to take and what was available. Lal gave me a few options to think about i.e. volunteering. Breast feeding support and courses available to me. From that meeting I enrolled onto an Introduction to SAGE course with Calderdale Adult Learning and applied for volunteering as admin/ reception support.

How often did you volunteer and in what role?

Once a week as support to the receptionist and administrators for the main centre and nursery at Jubilee

Did you take part in training as a volunteer?

Yes, I had to complete the Volunteer training and Safeguarding training

What is you role as a paid employee?

Administrator/ Receptionist for the Nursery at Jubilee Children’s Centre

What did volunteering mean to you?

It gave me the confidence back which I had loss over the years due to concentrating on my family. I felt it like I was getting myself back as it  was something that was for me.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with HOT?

Definitely apply!! You have nothing to lose. You can volunteer the hours that suit you and feel as though you are part of a team that does amazing things for the community.

How do you find it working for HOT?

It’s fulfilling as I feel I’m working with a great team of people that do some amazing things for the children and families in the area.
