Childcare and Family Support

The Trust has developed and delivered a range of community based services for families with young children in the Central Halifax Area for many years. In 2014 we won a contract to deliver Children’s Centres services at 11 sites throughout Calderdale from Todmorden to Siddal. To find out more about our Children’s Centre’s visit our dedicated children’s centre website here.

In addition to the Children’s Centre contract that Halifax Opportunities Trust delivers, we also run a nursery on site at Hanson Lane Enterprise Centre specifically aimed at children eligible for two year-old funding.

Little Gems opened in March 2014 and is a 56 place pre-School for children who are eligible for free 15 hours childcare.  We run two sessions every weekday from 9am – 12noon and 1:00pm – 4:00pm. The nursery is staffed by 9 early years professionals who are level 3 or above qualified and 1 apprentice.

We take children the term after their 2nd birthday and have 3 intakes per year January, Easter and September, the setting is on one floor so there is easy access for all users.

The Outback

The Outback is a unique community kitchen and garden based in the heart of the Park Ward community, directly behind Jubilee Children’s Centre. The 1 hectare site runs on organic and sustainable principles and the thriving garden is packed full of herbs, fruit and veg. There are lots of interesting areas for local children to explore and learn more about the natural environment whilst the straw bale kitchen provides a perfect space for the local community to gather and cook food.

At the Outback we offer volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, it’s a chance to get involved in this fantastic community project as well as meet other local people. The Outback shop is up and running and sells a variety of home grown organic fruit, veg, jams and chutneys. Please feel free to call into the Outback on Tuesdays and Thursdays to see what’s available.

Our Outback garden is open to the public on Thursday afternoons between April and October, and we run family gardening sessions on Tuesdays from 3.30 – 5.00 (April –October), Furthermore the fully equipped kitchen is available to hire and makes a great venue for cooking courses, training courses, meetings and events.

In Autumn 2015 the Trust opened two brand new commercial catering kitchens, one certified Halal, one non-Halal, under the name The Outfront Kitchen with the intention of providing nutritious, healthy meals to local primary schools and nurseries. Our dedicated Outfront kitchen team cooks up an incredible two and half thousand school meals a week for a number of schools across Calderdale, if you would like more information about Outfront contact
